Welcome To Asha Workers Union

Western Maharashtra ASHA Workers’ Union is a duly registered Trade Union having a Reg. No. PN 4096/10. It is currently functioning in more than 7 districts in the state of Maharashtra. ASHA stands for Accredited Social Health Activist.

To improve the health of poor population of the rural areas of our country, a drive was initiated by the Central Government in 2005 which is popularly known as National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). Under this scheme, about 8 lac workers were appointed in the country out of which about 64,000 workers are from Maharashtra. Besides, there are about 14,000 NRHM employees on contract basis and about 3,000 block facilitators in the state of Maharashtra. All these ASHA workers are doing extremely good work in facilitating health services in the rural, remote and inaccessible parts of Maharashtra which has resulted in not only controlling but considerably reducing the post-maternity death-rates of mothers and infants.

However, the plight of these ASHA Workers is extremely poor and miserable. They are underpaid. No facilities are provided at Health Center. Even no medical kits are provided to them. The Government is not even ready to recognise ASHA workers as their employees.

ASHA means Hope. ASHA workers are the coordinators between the Health Services and the rural population and thus giving a ray of hope and assurance to the poor and illiterate masses about health and hygiene. Visiting the various places, talking to mostly the illiterate and uneducated rural women, creating awareness about their health, advising them for precautions and care during pregnancy and post-maternity, child care, facilities available at the Health Center etc. are some examples of the work and responsibilities undertaken by ASHA workers.   However, the plight of these ASHA Workers is extremely poor and miserable. They are underpaid. No facilities are provided at Health Center. Even no medical kits are provided to them. The Government is not even ready to recognise ASHA workers as their employees.

To raise the voices of these ASHA Workers, the Western Maharashtra ASHA Workers’ Union has been making continuous efforts in uniting and orgnising them and thus to create a permanent pressuring body of workers, so that, the central and the state governments pay attention to the plight of ASHA Workers and improve their conditions.
